Really extraordinary scenes here in New York, as Occupy Wall Street protesters gather and mobilize around the city. It’s amazing to see the enormous surge of activity and support, while I for one am still baffled that city officials seemed to think that evicting Zuccotti Park protesters in the middle of the night wouldn’t provoke any kind of response. (Maybe they did and this is all part of the plan; but at the moment, public opinion sure isn’t with Mayor Bloomberg or the NYPD; the action seems to have invigorated and encouraged rather than dampened or halted.) Alexis Madrigal wrote an excellent piece in The Atlantic breaking down the meaning of #OWS, while longtime Radiohead artist, Stanley Donwood released this high resolution image as a free download for people to use as they like. He wrote:
As the mendacity of the One Per Cent continues, here is a small tool which you may download, blow up, paste, copy, pass on, and do whatever with. I’m not sure where the quote is from; I saw it on a poster at Occupy Sheffield last week, where they thought that the words were possibly from a former Prime Minister of Canada.

This is nice, man!!!
Norwegian Wild Reindeer Centre Pavilion by Snohetta.
- The accused is a white, male, American Army Sergeant
- He has been convicted of killing 3 innocent people literally for the fun of it
- He has admitted to keeping body parts, such as fingers, as trophies
- He led other soldiers in this killing of innocent, un-armed villagers and then taking disgusting pictures with their dead bodies
- This man went through the so-called Justice System and came out with a sentence that makes him eligible for parole in less than 9 years
- Compare this to Troy Davis, a black man who was accused of murdering 1 white police man, who was executed despite the fact that all but 2 witnesses in his trial recanted or contradicted their testimony
Do you see what I’m getting at? The differences are:
- In the first case the victims are Afghan villagers, they’re not white, they’re not American and in the Sergeant’s eyes they were “savages” whose lives were worth nothing- in the case of Troy Davis the victim was a white, American male so the case was much more aggressive.
- In the first case the accused was a white man and in the second case the accused was a black man
Do you understand what I’m getting at? More differences
- Sergeant Calvin killed THREE people, Davis was accused of killing ONE
- Calvin ADMITTED to taking the fingers of innocent people as TROPHIES while Davis denied all charges
- There was picture proof in the case of Sergeant Calvin while the evidence for the Troy Davis’ trial was shaky and contradictory and one of his so-called witnesses was the next prime suspect
Sergeant Calvin will most likely walk free in 9 years. Troy Davis is dead.
IS NO ONE ELSE FUCKING OUTRAGED?

In The Corporate Welfare State, George Monbiot discusses the state of government and policy in the United Kingdom, in particular the inequality that exists in the way that the rich (the 1%) are treated in contrast with the poor (the 99%.) His conclusion is nigh on devastating:
Limited liability, offshore secrecy regimes, deregulation and government handouts ensure that they bear none of the costs their class has inflicted on the rest of us. They live at our expense, while disparaging the lesser mortals who support them.
